Frequently Asked Questions About College Admissions Counseling
Is a college admissions counselor worth it?
A college admissions counselor can be a great resource for helping you navigate the complex and confusing process of applying to college.
You may feel overwhelmed by the amount of information and advice available online, as well as the number of people offering their opinions on how best to approach your application. A college admissions counselor can help you make sense of this information, give you guidance on how to present yourself, and ensure that you are submitting all necessary materials.
How do I choose a college admissions counselor?
When looking for a college admissions counselor, there are a few key things to consider. First and foremost, you want to make sure that the counselor you choose is experienced and knowledgeable about the college admissions process. This can be determined by asking for references from other students who have worked with the counselor, or by checking their credentials and experience. Additionally, you want to find a counselor who is a good fit for you personally. This means finding someone who you feel comfortable working with, and who understands your goals and concerns. It can also be helpful to find a counselor who is familiar with the schools you are interested in, as they can provide valuable insights and advice. Ultimately, the right college admissions counselor for you is one who has the experience, knowledge, and personal approach that you are looking for.
What questions should I ask a college admissions advisor?
When meeting with a college admissions counselor, there are a few key questions you should ask to get the most out of the meeting. Some examples of questions you might want to ask include:
- Can you tell me about your experience and qualifications?
- What is your approach to the college admissions process?
- Can you provide references from other students or families you have worked with?
- What schools do you have experience with, and which ones do you think would be a good fit for me?
- What are the most important things I should be doing to prepare for college admissions?
- Can you provide any advice or insights about the admissions process at the schools I am interested in?
Asking these questions will help you get a better sense of the counselor's experience and approach, and can give you valuable information to help you make an informed decision about whether to work with them.
What should I expect from college admissions counseling?
A college admissions counseling service can provide a wide range of support and assistance to students who are preparing to apply to college. Some common services offered by these organizations include:

How much do college admissions consulting services cost?
The cost of college admissions consulting services can vary depending on the specific services being provided, the length of time the student works with the consultant, and other factors. In general, however, college admissions consulting services can range from a few hundred dollars for a one-time consultation to several thousand dollars for ongoing support and guidance throughout the entire admissions process. Some consulting services may also offer discounts for students with financial need, or for families who are working with multiple students at the same time. It's always a good idea to ask about cost and payment options before committing to a consulting service, to ensure that it fits your budget and needs.
When is the right time begin college counseling services?
The right time to begin college coaching services will depend on a number of factors, including the student's individual needs and goals, their current stage in the college admissions process, and the specific services being offered. In general, however, it is usually best to start working with a college coach early in the process, ideally as soon as the student begins thinking about applying to college. This can give the coach time to get to know the student and understand their goals, and to provide guidance and support throughout the entire admissions process. Starting early can also help the student avoid missing important deadlines or missing out on opportunities, and can give them the best chance of being accepted to their top choice schools.
