I’ve been a professional tutor for the last 15 years.

In the wide field of test prep, my areas of specialty include GRE, GMAT, ACT, SAT, the CARS section of the MCAT, AP exams (literature, language, U.S. history, European history, world history, human geography, and government), ISEE, and SSAT. With my assistance, ACT students usually improve their scores anywhere from 2 to 7 points, and SAT students from 100 to 250 points. GMAT and GRE students typically improve about 20 to 25 percentiles, especially in the quantitative sections. Overall, in my career, I’ve helped somewhere between two and three thousand students boost their scores, across all exams.

Additionally, I’ve authored or co-authored many well-known test-prep titles in GMAT, GRE, European history, human geography, and language.

During the autumn, I provide college counseling for many high school seniors, assisting them with university selection, scheduling, application assembly, and (of course) essay brainstorming and editing. My high school students have gained admission to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, University of Chicago, USC, UC-Berkeley, the Benjamin Franklin Scholars program at U-Penn, and many others. I’ve found that 17-year-olds really appreciate having a non-related adult available for a bit of expert guidance during a very stressful period of life.

Despite my extensive liberal arts background, I am equally skilled and experienced at tutoring mathematics, particularly in algebra, algebra II, geometry, and arithmetic. In fact, for the last decade, a significant portion of my business has consisted of helping adult students navigate the tricky, labyrinthine quantitative sections of the GMAT and GRE. I’ve seen almost every type of mistake a person can make on these exams — many times — and I use that hard-won pattern recognition to push my students to the outer limits of their potential. My adult students have gained admission to MBA and other graduate programs at Northwestern, University of Chicago, DePaul, UCLA, Kent State, and too many others to name.

In my parallel career as a writer and editor, I’ve published sixteen books under a pseudonym, one of which reached #1 in the Amazon Free Kindle store for a day and a half. In the last decade, I’ve completed or contributed to over 70 different pieces of long-form writing — international travel books, opioid crisis nonfiction, aviation terrorism thrillers, toxic workplace memoirs, comedic screenplays, you name it. To some of my literary clients, I provide heavy developmental editing; to others, full-on ghostwriting.

Before entering the field of education, I worked in the Hollywood feature film industry as a script analyst, in high-tech as a sales writer, and in journalism at The Washington Post. I was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to The Catholic University of America, where, in a little over four years, I earned both a B.A. in literature and an M.A. in rhetoric and composition. I graduated magna cum laude and was designated a University Scholar for my excellence in the honors program. I also spent a year studying history and literature at Oxford University, England.

For in-person tutoring, I offer a 20% discount to clients willing to travel to my neighborhood on the north side of Chicago. I do accept online students and have tutored people living as far away as England, Cameroon, and South Korea.
