Biography

Joanna Loewi is an outstanding tutor of young children whose strong background in education makes her an ideal fit for students with a wide variety of needs. She obtained a Masters Degree in both General and Special Education through the New York City Teaching Fellows Program and spent seven years as an elementary school teacher with the NYC Department of Education. In this role she successfully supported her students to overcome academic obstacles by building self-confidence, capitalizing on individual strengths and interests through differentiated lesson plans, and enhancing their enjoyment in the learning process. This individualized and flexible approach to teaching, coupled with her patient and nurturing demeanor, set her apart from other teachers.

Joanna now dedicates her time to private tutoring, which has enabled her to provide children with more individualized support. She excels at crafting unique lessons that incorporate creative strategies to help engage students in the learning process. She also encourages opportunities for self-discovery and exploration by focusing on the process of learning rather than simply memorizing facts and information. She specializes in Kindergarten Readiness, Elementary Education, confidence building, and preparing students for the ECAA, AABL, and ISEE exams.

Joanna approaches tutoring as both an educator and a mentor. She understands that children who are in need of special attention in developing their academic skill set also need a strong social and emotional foundation in order to truly excel. She finds the vast majority of academic solutions available to kids too compartmentalized to be truly beneficial. Kids require a level of support that extends beyond just their academic environment – the concept of personal development is often glossed over and not sufficiently addressed for many kids. Part of her goal as an educator is to bridge this gap by addressing the whole child. This holistic approach provides children with the tools and the skill set required to navigate the challenges that inevitably occur throughout childhood and into adolescence.

Joanna graduated magna cum laude in 2005 with a double major in English Literature and Spanish Literature from the Honors Program at The George Washington University, where she was awarded a full academic scholarship. She spent a semester in Spain, studying Spanish at the University of Sevilla. Born and raised in Manhattan, she graduated with honors from Riverdale Country School. She currently lives in Gramercy with her husband and 21-month-old twin boys.
